Preparations

My father mistakenly thought that when he passed that the VA would handle everything. After speaking to his social worker I found that they do nothing. He wants to be cremated & she gave me the name of a place nearby-I got the forms today and asked family members if they have any desires to make them known now. His sister would like to have some to be buried with her. I was thrilled to have an answer, not one he would be thrilled with, but an answer just the same as far as what to do with the ashes. Her family has done all her preparations for her- I think it's a great idea. Cremation is about $1,200.00. everything included.
You would think the VA would do something for a German P.O.W. ?

Dear Jade, I did find a link for Military Funeral Honors. Family members should inform their funeral director if they want military honors. The DOD number for this is 1-877-MIL-HONR for use by funeral direcrtors only to request honors. VA can arrange honors for burials at VA national cemeteries. Your dad should qualify for burial in a VA national site. Here is a link that may provide more information
http://www.militaryfuneralhonors.osd.mil/ As I wrote earlier Veterans' service organizations may also provide honors. Should I find more links I will send them along to you. As ever be well

Thanks! I found that link yesterday. Not sure if burial itself is covered though.

Don't think cost is covered up to family and funeral director to set upthe military service etc. You are right it is awful they don't include it.

As I have come to learn, the government seems satisfied to do the minimum for our veterans. Same for the elderly in general.
It's a shame.
