When I saw this on the news I felt pity for the man.
He had been caring for his mother alone for 20 years.
For the last year she was bed-ridden.
You could see the depression in his eyes.
When the news showed other family members
they were all 'la-de-da', healthy, young.

You are so right..people have NO IDEA how bad or hard it is, unless they have done it themselves. I had no help at all much, only rest I got was when mom was in the care center for so many months. I still went there every day and sometimes stayed all day long if needed. I was able to SLEEP though which was wonderful. The kicker is..because I did that and it was needed for me to do, I have no "real" work exp for the past 15 years so filling out applications is a waste of time. Been doing it for months and no luck so far,, it just sucks! I can get where he just had had enough and couldn't take anymore.
I feel sorry for him, too. No use taking Ativan though - that won't kill you! I have no help - my brother doesn't want to see his mother any more, the grandchildren aren't that interested, there's just my daughter who lives on the other side of the country, and me. I can picture how this man got so desperate.
