When you visit your elderly parent don't just look in and see that they have food in there. Open the containers and check the condition of it!
Milk and cottage cheese could be rotten but the closed containers look fine.
While mom was in the shower I grabbed a package of "Keep Frozen" preservative free hotdogs out of the refrigerator. They were GREY (ugh), and brought it with me to throw away. Yes, they will pick stuff out of the trash.
Another thing to check is the toaster oven temperature knob. Also the condition of the frozen dinner pans and cooking pots for signs of burnt or melting (a pot soaking in the sink or full of scouring powder etc.)
Combustible or plastic items near radiators is a good thing to check too.

Sometimes I don't know if it's an advantage or disadvantage to have her here living with me. I guess it's all according to whose eyes from which you peer. The things you listed are so important and I'm sure overlooked in so many people's cases. My mother never looks or smells anything before she eats it. I have to be vigilant about keeping the "must go's" gone!
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with good food, family and friends.
Good advice!! Happy Thanksgiving.
